Press.

Tanner sent a reporter to me today. There will probably be an article in Saturday's paper. There's also a press release that Amber cooked up, so there's always a possibility of more media interest. I think she posted the press release somewhere; if you want you can always ask at the front desk, too...

In related news, if anybody has any good pictures of pieces of hardware, the N&O guy from today is interested to see them... send 'em my way and I shall pass them along. (Single point of contact probably easiest, though if anybody has specific messages to pass along to the reporter I'll be happy to convey those as well.)

Cheers,

I just created an account on

I just created an account on yogile which is a new photo sharing service, and I've uploaded several pix I took at our meetings and during work sessions on the 'space capsule'.

http://www.yogile.com/tsrdunearspace#o1s

You can also upload photos to this by emailing them to tsrdunearspace@yogile.com

I uploaded a mix of resolutions. There seems to be some kind of monthly size limit, but I only saw it when I set up the album (I think it was 10MB/month but I'm not sure how to find it or what has currently been used)\

I uploaded a few at my iPhones full 5MB resolution but most are smaller, I still have the originals if we need them.

So If you upload more you might want to use a reduced size and keep the originals if requested.

Amber

Amber has agreed to take a picture tonight and email it to the guy, hopefully in time for press. She'll be finishing a class just after our meeting starts. We're all bringing our gear anyways for integration, so my idea at least would be a group picture of anybody who wants to be in it, plus our gear laid out on the table in front of us... though whatever works.

Will pass the link on to the guy, but I don't know what the rules are about printing photos without explicit consent...?

in slightly-related news, due to unforeseen circumstances I've had to cancel the thing I was doing this evening and tomorrow, so I will be around for this evening, for however long I'm useful... there's not a whole lot of balloon envelope integration that's going on tonight, though, so once I become deadweight I'll get out of you experts' way and go home. (:

News & Observer: Raleigh balloon hobbyists aim for stratosphere

Mr. Josh Shaffer of the N&O wrote up a nice story on the Team TechShop NC launch. Note the cautionary segment about the APRS data going wonky at 60,000 feet!

More Press!

Saw the newspaper article--looked good!

Also just got email from WRAL-TV (!). From the email:

We plan on sending out photographer, Tom Peace, out to shoot some video of the launch and maybe talk to a few people involved with this project! He knows to be there by 8am when the launch starts

So... anybody want to be on TV??

--me

Awesome!

Awesome! I'll make sure to wear my "Rocket Scientist" shirt. :-)

More Press.

Emailed this to at least some of y'all... There should be a followup article in tomorrow's (Tuesday 8/24) paper. He didn't talk more than a few words to me, so I don't really know what's in it--maybe pictures?

Cheers,

I saw it

I saw an ~45 second bit and a pre-break tease about the launch on WRAL 11 news last night. No interviews but they did put the name and what it was and why it was done.

Our capsule photo: N&O

Here is the N&O article, with our team's capsule photo and writeup:

Thanks!

Yet more press.

WRAL has me coming down for an interview (!) in a little while. Mercifully it's recorded and not live, as any of you who saw me stammer in front of the cameras Sunday could attest to... ehh, I'll do my best.

So check out this evening's news... they're planning on showing off our pictures. (Tanner, heads up: I gave them a link to the full size "favorites" image site.)

Cheers, all!

Awesome. Ask if we might be able to get an HD copy of the interview. :-)

Cool!

Cool!

WRAL, WNCT

Hey, folks,

Interviewed at WRAL's studio today; they say unless breaking news bumps us, we'll be on the six o'clock today. I felt pretty nervous but she said I looked fine on tape, so whatever... Excited about the fact that people think this was as awesome as we think it was, though I am not cut out to be on camera (:

WNCT in Greenville is also running our pictures tonight, if anybody's far enough east to pick them up (...Rodney?), and they'll send us a link to the video online later. I bounced them the pre-launch press release and tried to tell the producer a few quick words, but I think she was mostly just interested in the pics. Guess we'll see.

AP also wanted the pics. Woo.

--me

WRAL says...

"As long as there’s no breaking news, please look for your story tonight on WRAL News at 6:00pm. It will air after the 1st commercial break."

geez. so we're in today's paper, WRAL's six o'clock news today, WNCT Greenville's news today, and the AP asked to run our pictures too. I guess other people think our project was pretty awesome too!

can't say enough how glad I am to have been on this great team!

NPR

You guys were just featured on the local NPR news during All Things Considered. You can go to wunc.org and click on the play button for the Latest WUNC Newscast. I don't know how many times they'll repeat it, but the link is good for now.

WNCT

I had hoped they'd post video, but here's the blurb I got from their website:

http://www2.wnct.com/news/2010/aug/24/space-balloon-launch-nc-ar-346919/

cheers, y'all!

Does anyone have the link to this? I looked around and could not find any mention of the launch...

I recorded the video from

I recorded the video from WRAL on my Mac but I'll need to export the video tonight to share it. Did they post a clip?

I also recorded an HD copy of the video on my computer at home, but I have to convert it to something the mac can work with and then extract it out of the 30 minute newscast before it will be usable.

WRAL, however, has posted it to their website: http://www.wral.com/news/local/video/8185176/

All press coverage in one place

I've tried to put links to all our press coverage in one spot. If anyone can help fill out what I've missed, I would appreciate it:

The links to the articles go stale after a while as they move on to other articles, so it would be nice to have a digitally recorded copy of each of the news snippets, and a .pdf of each of the newspaper articles - is it possible for you to create a location to archive them as they are created? I know we have some - can someone else fill in the rest and upload them to one place?

My goal is to have a single CD with all the images, video, and pdf in one location for archival - be nice if there was a way to include the comments from the forums as well.

A friend of mine from Greensboro

Sent me a PDF scan of a little article from the Greensboro News & Record

Digital archives.

Rodney,

The WRAL links should stay valid as they have many, many years of stories available in their archives.

Not sure about that for the N&O. Can anyone comment about that?

Once you do this...

When you have compiled everything, we will want to make it a permanent part or our website as well.

Scott

N&O links stay valid for

N&O links stay valid for "subscribers" but go stale after a little while for the general public. Will see about WRAL video.

Web Weather Extra

Nate Johnson asked me to record a "Web Weather Extra" with him, but I think Tanner's doing this one. Keep an eye out for it!

I think it would be found here: http://www.wral.com/weather/asset_gallery/5374788/

The above solidifies my interest in having an archival copy of the articles for my own use - can someone who recorded it convert it to a digital movie file you can put on a CD for me?

Thanx,
Rodney

Plastic jug?

Speaking of that, out of curiosity, what happened to the plastic jug we used as a payload. It would be cool to show that off if possible.

Re: Plastic jug

Check with Jonathan T - I think he has it since it was still attached to his parachute, camera and Spot tracker...

Plastic Jug? What Plastic Jug?

Plastic Jug? What Plastic Jug?

If you mean the CAPSULE, I have that! Damn thing went into space! A little respect is due. It was a jug when it was in the trunk of the car. Now it is a capsule.

I have both the capsule, and the black hatch that screwed on to the top of the capsule. Plus, parachute, rigging line, foam, and balloon shards.

I will bring them to Brixx on Sunday, unless wanted early.

Jonathan

P.S.: If someone is going to talk to a weather guy, I'm interested in tagging along as a silent observer. Ok, I'm lying about the silent part; I have questions.

So, everyone knows what's up, I'm scheduled to go talk with Nate Johnson at WRAL tomorrow at 1pm. I've been in touch with Jonathan about picking up the capsule tonight and have asked Nate about Jonathan tagging along (which I don't see as a problem but I thought I'd be polite and ask them first). According to Nate this would be for their Web Weather Extra series ( http://www.wral.com/weather/asset_gallery/5374788/ ) which apparently comes out each Wednesday on their website (but is not broadcast on air).

The video was posted today.
