As a followup to the kitchen cabinet making class, I'd like to gauge interest in a furniture grade cabinet making class.
This class would concentrate on traditional (and modern variations) joinery such as spline miters, mortise and tendon, dovetail, rail and panel, etc. as well as glue only assembly to construct an example Arts and Crafts style cabinet in solid wood. Students can participate in the production of the example cabinet or build a specific piece of furniture for their own home.
Some topics that I would discuss in the course of the class would be wood selection, hardwood vs softwood, different wood species, grain consideration in selection of stock, use of jigs and fixtures, working to a high precision.
This class would utilize pretty much all of the tools in the wood shop as well as introduce some you may want to invest in for your own projects and possibly a few handbuilt tools. Students would not need any prior woodworking experience except the woodshop SBU, but should be prepared to work to a high precision level required of fine furniture.
