New mailing lists about to go live, please help!

As those with ears for IT-related happenings, you may have heard we're in the process of overhauling the mailing lists associated with TechShop RDU. Everything is basically done, and a (very) small band of volunteers has been testing the basic functionality with me. Before we turn things loose to 200x as many people, I'd like to slightly (but quickly) ramp up the testing.

So although this may fall on deaf ears for forum-goers, if you're willing to help TechShop test this new tool, please...

  • Go to the main page of the TechShop RDU website (http://techshoprdu.com)
  • Click the "Mailing List Subscriptions" link on the left side menu
  • There are two options here (try both!)
    1. Signup and/or manage the official broadcast/newsletter subscriptions by typing your email address in the box. Follow any directions on the resulting page (you'll probably need to confirm changes by checking your email).
    2. Click the link named http://lists.techshoprdu.com/ to sign up for the "TSRDU-Talk" general discussion list. This list is similar to the type of discussions we have here on the forum (but email based).
  • Reply in the forum or send me mail to indicate which address you used to sign up. I only need this during the testing phase to verify. It is not part of the normal procedure.

Note that we've been having some inconsistent behavior relating to Yahoo's anti-spam system. If you sign up for any of these new lists, please double check your spam folder for confirmations/messages. Please mark them as "not spam" if you find one there.

And of course, let me know if anything is unclear or goes wonky during the process. The better things work, the more successful we'll be in bringing TechShop to the world.

signed up for both

I used "gallamine at google's mail service".

For the "lists.techshoprdu.com" page there was a lot of text. I read it all, I promise, but I'm not sure others will. Perhaps some bolded bullet points to convey the main info?

I signed up for the first

I signed up for the first list using jdanforth at shinyphotos dot com. I agree. There is a helluva lot to read to sign up for the other thing.

For what it's worth, I use MailChimp for the Maker Faire:NC list and it took me about an hour to configure for hundreds of people...

Thanks

Appreciate the help.

Regarding the discussion list signup page, I agree it might come off as a bit much. I didn't originally give it much thought since it's 95% the standard Mailman form. People who have signed up for a number of lists in the past won't give it another thought, but I'll see what I can do to pare it down a bit.

As for MailChimp, that would bet $50/mo for a mailing list our size, and wouldn't help support the discussion lists or any type of forum integration. Nice, small site for direct marketing campaigns, though.

no problems

I had no problems navigating or using the system

no problems

mlavoie@nvidia.com is the acct.

Yahoo Users -- Help with spam filters

For any Yahoo users: I created a help wiki for creating filters that will ensure the emails end up in the Inbox, rather than the spam folder.

And we're live

So as you might have gleaned from Scott's blog post, the new mailing lists have been pre-populated and announced. A few tiny hiccups, but things appear to be humming along nicely with our much larger subscriber list. Not to mention it's growing as we speak. Hopefully Scott and staff can make great use of the broadcast lists, and the community gets a chance to speak their mind on the discussion lists.

Huge thanks to all who tested, with an extra tip o' the old hat to sushinut for his thorough poking and documenting of the new system!

We're far from done, though... the tech behind TechShop will continue to evolve. Feel free to pass along any bug reports or constructive criticisms you deem valuable. I'll do my best to keep my responses civil. =)

Next up, some early forum software testing. As always, anyone who wants to contribute should feel free to drop me a note.

NICE job, Jeff.

Thank you for all your hard work on the mailing list!
