We have had a lot of interest in this topic and a number of good ideas and great discussions. Based on member comments, I believe we will have a good turnout on Monday, March 1 at 6:30. The main focus of this meeting will be the layout and needs of the "Laser Suite", with the addition discussion on member storage.
I hope to see ya'll there, we want everyone's input so that we all feel at home in the greatest TechShop on earth.

I believe, with a little help from my friends, that we can create some beautiful furniture that would be both functional, comfortable and nice to look at. I started a wiki page -- http://wiki.techshoprdu.com/index.php?title=Furniture_for_the_New_TechSh...

Wow! A large load of MDF or Birch ply there. I'd love to help design and build something like that. Beside jewelry, my masters includes an emphasis in wood design/cabinetmaking. How thick/overall size material can the laser cutter handle? be really cool to build out of honeycomb aluminum panels!
Mark, that would be really
Mark, that would be really slick. Too bad I have no wood skills :(
What, btw, is "Rhino"?
Cool inspiration...
Hi Mark, met you at the laser cutter. I am the guy that was doing the 1000 acrylic disks for the Rev. Horton Heat proj.
I'm interested in helping out.
I'm a:
- woodworker/cabinet builder.
- Rhino user. I do CAD for a living. Rhino + Grasshopper might be a way to automate the way things slot together.
- way into weird geometry. :0
- I like what I've seen of your laser experiments. This would be ShopBot cut, yes?
- the pic you posted is cool inspiration.

Shopbot vs Laser
For this project I was thinking along the lines of the shopbot instead of the laser cutter. (The Laser was so TechShop Durham, the Shopbot is Techshop RDU)
But seriously, I was thinking MDF on the shopbot, though the idea of aluminum panels sound great. Another idea--we can add accents or veneer to the MDF with laser cut/etched/Vector etched designs.
No matter what, MDF
No matter what, MDF eventually sags when loaded. I was thinking Birch ply for rigidity, or honeycomb aluminum for high tech, durability.
I wasn't familiar with what a "Shop Bot" was, Googled it, and yes, that would be the machine to use. I am loking forwards to the opening of TS v. 2.0! Visions of projects are dancing in my head.
yep... birch/baltic birch ply all the way
Agree... birch/baltic birch is great stuff. I agree MDF sagging is a potential problem, but I use MDF on a LOT of projects... depends very much (IMHO) on what you're building, its design, the load, and the amount of expected wear and tear. For that clean IKEA look, though, nothing beats birch ply or baltic birch. Love the stuff.
Mark-- I wasn't even thinking aluminum, until Golden1 mentioned it. I REALLY like the idea, especially with your plasma skills.
Like Robert above, I'm also a big fan of odd geometry.... also have some good experience with knockdown furniture design/building. Recently, I've been working with bending and laminating sheets of wood. That could be a really cool design element.
Do you think you are going to try to collaborate at TechShop or via the forum, the wiki... or other means?
BTW, I'm chompin at the bit to take the ShopBot SBU. If nothing else, I'd love to watch anyone working the plasma or ShopBot for this project. When you guys get to a cutting stage, could you be sure to post when you're doing it???
Mike
Would love to meet up.
Mike, et al,
How about getting together to sketch out some plans for furniture.
How about Thursday at the shop at 6:00 p.m. I am heading over to the shop now to talk to Scott.
Give me a call 919-623-5497.

Since I am not yet a member,
Since I am not yet a member, can I participate in the furniture get together as a volunteer?
go for it, Golden1
Yep. I certainly hope nobody would complain about us volunteering to help make the place look nice. :D
Golden1 Welcome
Yes you can.
Come one come all.
I hope to see everyone's at the shop for the Laser suite Planning Meeting, Monday March 1 - 6:30 p.m.
Mark, can't make the meeting,
Mark, can't make the meeting, but I like the tool storage idea... been meaning to finish building out a 3d scanner to easily model the tools & shadow them like I did for my tool holster... if you remember that.
If it comes up, mention @ the meeting that I'm up for taking that on as a project.
Hey, the Triangle Robotics
Hey, the Triangle Robotics Club was planning on meeting at 7:00 tonight. Where were y'all going to be? I haven't been to the new location lately, so I don't know how much occupiable space there is. I didn't want to have two groups fighting for the same meeting space :)
I would like to come but I am
I would like to come but I am stuck with the Boyz (7 and 10) tonight. I don't know if the new space is kid-safe yet.

Jeff's kids have been running all over the place for a while for whatever that's worth.
I'll see you guys there tonight. Looking forward to meeting the new people!

Oh and Otto I was would be happy to help with the 3D scanner. I don't know much about the software but if you can help me with that then I'll help you with the hardware and build.
Mon. meeting
I should be there.

Unfortunately...
... it appears whatever illness I've been dealing with for almost 3 weeks now didn't like me doing all that painting on Saturday. I'm down for the count again and won't be able to make it tonight. I hope I didn't get anyone else sick there on Sat. :(

@jdanforth, I may need your
@jdanforth, I may need your help... you're the one who got the line laser. I haven't ordered one yet. :)
We talked about it before... but couldn't find the data files you had. The latest Make mag has a good article on a mechanism for getting good scans.
