Hello-
This was brought up at the first "we're moving" meeting. In case no one else has jumped on it, here it is again:
TS needs a big "community board" where members can write and/or put up notices: requests for help/materials, people looking to unload tools/materials, folks looking for project partners, etc.
Ideally this should all happen on this forum, but IMO this forum is broken, plus there are old-school types who don't use the Intertubes very much, for fear of clogging them.
I think that there is at least one steel-backed whiteboard somewhere at TS; that would be ideal. Things can be written with dry-erase markers OR paper can be stuck up with magnets.
If an appropriate board can be put aside and a central, convenient place designated, I will be happy to put this board up and cut appropriate vinyl signage for it.
If anyone has any thoughts about this, about policies regarding it, or why it should/shouldn't be done, please respond.

I gotta second you on the forum thing. phpBB is out there, free, is fully featured (PM, profiles, &c.) and works beautifully.
For that matter, why doesn't TechShop Mothership just have one forum for all of the locations? We only need about 6 individual sections (wood, metal, textiles, electronics, announcements, and 'General') plus regional ones for Portland, Durham, Menlo, and SF. I've always been bewildered at the detachment from TS Corporate in this regard. Why aren't there quarterly video-conference-enabled country-wide parties held at each TechShop simultaneously or something? Ya know... FUN!
Bulletin board sounds great. Probably the easiest thing to do is to throw up a cork bulletin board at the front door that has a policy stated above: "All posters will be removed on the last Friday of the Month" or something to that effect.
Another agreement on BB
I also like the idea of a physical bulletin board as well as a PHPBB-based board that covers other locations. (PHBB works reasonably well with my iPhone, too). Better communication among like-minded people can only lead to good things.
For those who might not "get"
For those who might not "get" the importance of a better forum, here are some thoughts. People who use the Internet to network and get things done are used to certain features. Most of these are oriented towards being able to use the forum quickly and efficiently.
1. Clean design, w/o a lot of junk that takes a long time to load and makes it visually cluttered.
2. Built-in PM function, to quickly send a personal note
3. A good front page w/ all the subforums in a row, that graphically shows what forums have new messages.
4. User icons: these are not just cute pictures; they serve a function by allowing a user to quickly scan and see who has responded in a thread.
I'm sure there are more, but it's irrelevant because it's all been worked out by others, resulting in phpbb as the default software to use. I am active on many forums on various subjects, and because they are well designed, I can hit multiple ones in different browser tabs at the same time and read them all in just a few minutes. That's good efficient design.
Attempting to build a new forum w/o using the open source phpbb software is like reinventing the wheel, and the wheel in question came out sort of... hexagonal and lopsided.
Look at Menlo's or Portland's boards. We should steal one of those.
On community in general: the forum and the community white (or cork, or magnetic) board are just ways to build a sense of community. Without that sense, then TSRDU is just a bunch of tools with a roof over it. People will come, use what they use, and leave. No excitement, no passion, no synergy.
We had it and IMO we lost it. There are other ways to build that sense (which I'll write about and some of which I'll be willing to helm) but setting up communication routes is the first thing.
This has gotten really long. Blame my workplace for giving me President's Day off.

Yay for phpBB
Here's another vote for phpBB. I know it's easy to use the standard Drupal forums, but they suck. phpBB is used by everybody and their brother, and so should we.
why doesn't TechShop Mothership just have one forum for all of the locations?

Those sounds like really good ideas. I like it. Perhaps you should suggest it to Mark Hatch (@markhatch, or DM me for his email).
In regards to community boards, I know a cheap way of doing a whiteboard is to buy a 8'x4' sheet of bathroom sheeting or melamine. Cheap and easy - it doesn't erase quite as well, but a bottle of windex takes care of that.
FWIW, I hear if you pre-treat
FWIW, I hear if you pre-treat the melamine with acetone before doing anything else to it, it works just like any other decent whiteboard. The issue is the dust and grid and crud that accumulates in the open air during shipping & storage.
It's REALLY easy to talk
It's REALLY easy to talk about what you think is wrong, and suggest extensive, expensive fixes, but, have you ever talked to anyone about it? It's NOT easy to shift software at the blink of an eye, it's not easy to do "quarterly video-conference-enabled country-wide parties"!
Do you have any idea what the staffing levels are in these stores? Any idea that TechShop Corporate is only 6 people? How about volunteering some time to make some of your suggestions happen? TechShop is a start-up - as such, it's going to take time to build the community and build staffing, it's ALL dependent upon making the money to hire awesome people to help, or get awesome volunteers to help! We're trying to make it all happen as quickly as we can, AND pay staff to do the awesome work they do!
TRUST ME, we'd all LOVE to have a quarterly party, we are just running so fast to make sure that equipment is working and that the base services are being provided!
How about you, the members, get a quarterly party going, and maybe fund and establish the technology to make the video conferencing happen?!
Good help is generally never turned down!
IMHO!
Lynne.
Let's drop this one and....
Let's all check out the positive direction we're headed on http://techshoprdu.com/node/616
It relates to this thread and started out a bit tense to say the least, but I think we're getting closer to the solution over there.
I also want to say how much I appreciate the passion everyone seems to have over these issues. It shows how much people care about their TechShop.
It would be horrible if everyone said this sucks........ who cares?
Thanks for caring,
Scott
Ya know? It's late and I
Ya know? It's late and I think I overreacted a bit in that post. You're comments really took me by surprise. If it were possible to edit or delete the post, I would but that functionality doesn't exist.
I'm very passionate about this place. Can ya tell?
Done
I deleted it for you John. Only because you said you wanted it that way. I didn't even read it all. I should have unpublished it or asked you what you wanted it changed to. but I didn't think of it fast enough. Well, feel free to repost anything you want public.
And that functionality does exist in a way. Anyone who ever wants to edit or remove a post, simply has to ask me. I'll do it for you in a heartbeat. Editing someone else's is a different story, but if you want to change your own words, I see no reason not to do it for you.

Otto, you mean just give it a good scrub with acetone? That's pretty interesting. I always thought the "nice" whiteboards had some sort of coating that make it work so nicely.
Otay, back to the physical
Otay, back to the physical board: Is there going to be a place designated for it, and is there a white/cork board available? Or should I go looking for some melamine?
If so, then I can mount/label the board once the wall in question is painted, and make a vinyl sign for it, as I offered above.

Who are you (Lynne)?
I AM a staff member in one of these stores, I DO know the amazing amount of work that goes on by both the staff and the members. I DON'T know who you are, nor have I seen you on these discussion boards, at the shop, nor helping in any meaningful way. Do you routinely dismiss the ideas of members, and are they aware at Menlo Park that you do this? Discussion of how to improve things is GREATLY appreciated by those of us who do the day-in, day-out grunt work at TechShop. Snippy replies to members who have donated their time, equipment, and money to this venture is possibly the least productive way to foster good will. The suggestions that Mr. Danforth proposed would cost TechShop precisely nothing (phpBB is freeware, we all have webcams laying around unused, and most of us can be found doing things at TechShop on any given day of the week). I welcome ANY and ALL suggestions about how to improve TechShop, and I seriously suggest that you do the same.

Thanks for deleting the post,
Thanks for deleting the post, Scott. I'm a bit tetchy so I'm going to remain quiet instead.
FWIW - DIY White Board
I know whiteboards can be moderatrly expensive (4'x6' is generally around $200). I know that Rust-oleum makes whiteboard paint. I've not used it myself, but have seen it used on HGTV decorating shows. I think they sell it at Walmart. Here's an example: http://www.thegreathardwarestore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=8116...
If it works well, it would be a nice design project, as well (like making the whole board look like the outline of the TSD logo). Anyone every use it?
BTW... I've seen it painted directly on the wall too...

I don't know that it would actually be useful, but it sure would be clever to have a section of 1) whiteboard 2) chalkboard (paint) and 3) corkboard ... choose your poison :)
more info.
Rust-oleum is a 2-part epoxy system... coverage is only about 7'x7' with one kit ($25) and 2 coats.

Maybe this is something to look into, instead of melamine.

Rustoleum products look very cool
Hopefully someone can attest to some quality results from the Rustoleum whiteboard paint. It looks like a very slick way to go if we want a large or non-rectangular board. Notice that they also have a magnetic primer:

...which just makes it all the cooler if the two can be combined. Nice find!
@shushinut shower board is
@shushinut shower board is melamine. Hard board covered melamine to be exact.
But isn't this whole thing moot? There were some large magnetic whiteboards at TechShop. Is this not hang one, put a sign on it and we're done?
Yes Otto, it is
I thought I had already answered this, but will do so again.
Yes, we have a bunch of whiteboards, some of them magnetic. None of them have any particular "assignment" other than that they are our TechShop whiteboards. I guess that means they can go anywhere except into private spaces.
We can make sure one gets put in a prominent space. Where do you think it should go? My first idea would be to put it across from the kitchen along the hallway. With that said, I guess it's about time for me to post the relatively final floor plans. Upstairs is done.............. I think. Downstairs needs work yet.
I'll upload the upstairs plan and then add a link to tonight's blog unless someone has a better suggestion.
Thanks,
Scott
ah

Good to know. A glossy melamine.
Yes, next to the library, maybe.
Yeah, Scott, that seems like the best spot. It's right on the hall in the main drag through the second floor.
But now that I look, again, after I've figured out how to see the 3D view in SweetHome, I'm not sure there's space given the windows. Maybe right where you have the bookshelf now & bump that to one of the smaller open wall spaces.
In any case, it doesn't have to get decided right now, but somewhere along there seems ideal.
Details
It's amazing how much time it takes to go over all these details. Yes, we will find the right place and probably somewhere in that area. For now, it's just a small bookshelf.
I had thought it would be a good idea to build around the windows and have a large library eventually covering all of that wall but leaving the windows uncovered.
