Floorplanning fun

I spent way too much time playing around with potential floorplans tonight. At last week's meeting someone mentioned Sweet Home 3D, so I gave it a try and found it pretty easy to use. I figured I'd post my musings as a jumping off point for others that wanted to play around with different ideas.

Sweet Home 3D is freely available at CNET and a number of other places.

Floorplan files:

5905TriangleDr_1stFloor_take1.sh3d
5905TriangleDr_1stFloor_take2.sh3d

5905TriangleDr_1stFloor_take4.sh3d

Renderings from the first and last files above to give you an idea of what is possible:

Obligatory disclaimer - the scale may be totally wrong, the HVAC units are omitted, etc.

Thank you Ryan

Great job, nice to see current plan as well as incremental steps on how we got there.

Slightly More accurate Base in Sweet 3D

A couple of us went over yesterday and took more measurements. I'm posting here a slightly more accurate base floorplan of the existing 1st floor. There is another wall or two in the back that doesn't show on the original plans.

Ryan, Awesome renderings. I

Ryan,
Awesome renderings. I was trying to figure out an easy way of doing this, short of using Solidworks.
Did you, or anyone, get some dimensions for the 2nd floor? I know there was discussion of putting tables/lounge up there also, and it'd be nice to see some potential layouts for the various rooms.

Second Floor

I took some measurements yesterday, so here's a first swipe at 2nd floor...
The red areas are the other tenant. I didn't fill in the front hall since you can't really put anything there. The stairs go up instead of down. :-)
The bathrooms didn't get measured, so that is why they are off-size.

Otherwise, something to play with.

Change

Ron, the little room you have in red in the center upstairs is ours. The part that belongs to Intech is the space just below (as drawn) the bathrooms. Or the lower right corner of the big room you have them in now. You're actually not showing the walls that are there. I haven't started to figure out how this program works, but perhaps today would be a good time. Looks like a great tool to layout our new spaces.

Thanks for doing this. And thanks to everyone who is putting energy into this. I have emails with more ideas and will try to implement as many into the final plan as possible.

Scott

Second Floor Changed

I updated the file. Yea, I didn't measure the inside of the bathrooms, and that indentation is from inside-the-room measurements, so it doesn't quite add up.

I really wish I knew the size of the major machines. Anybody?

If the plasma cutter is really a full 6 feet wide, we'll have to take down a wall on the first floor (right-hand garage door, I'd suggest) to get it into the building.

What's slated for upper floor?

Would plastics lab, vinyl cutter, electronics lab, and laser cutters go well upstairs?

Oh, remind me, and I'll bring in a camera for monitoring upstairs from the front desk.

I'm working on it

I've spent all day working on the layouts, but I need information from my desk that I forgot to bring home, so I will go get them in the morning and continue. Once I have a few possibilities, I'll post them.

Yes all those will go upstairs as will the rentals, conference room and more. I need those papers to tell you more detail.

Scott

More possibilities

Here's the latest that I've been playing with. I've incorporated the dimensions from Ron (Thanks!) and put both floors in the same file. It would be good to get the location of the HVAC units on the first floor and figure out if the walls by the stairs in front can go. Scott, I hope to compare notes with you tomorrow and would be more than happy to help get your plans into the computer.

First Floor with HVAC in place

Here's the first floor with HVAC sized and placed properly. They're really big footprints.
Just for fun, I've dropped in an anvil and a number of the woodshop machines with the correct sizes. I don't know, Ryan, if you can pull those in but they're posted here:

Second floor is undersized

My 2nd floor is too short. I've been on the phone with Mike our draftsman, and I've got some updates. I'm working on adding those now.
I'll update when I've got it done.

Second Floor Base Updated

I think I've got the second floor right, now... but the room by the wide stairs is 28' instead of 58', making the Intech room 62' instead 32'.

I don't know how that jives with your memory... it's what we wrote down, though.

Best,
Ron

58 not 28

You are correct that it is 58, not 28. I made the change and the math for how much space they have works out perfectly.

Scott

2nd Floor Base now right

Updated to be 28. I replaced the old 2nd floor plan. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4361087/5905TriangleDr_2ndFloor_base.sh3d

sweet home files

I have been trying off and on for a while and haven't been able to get the floorplan files open. Download 'em, unzip 'em, but then sweet home doesn't do anything with them. Can someone give me a clue on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

Not sure

You installed SH successfully? You can open it and create your own file?
You can use it to open a downloaded file? Start > Programs > eTec Sweet Homes 3D > Sweet Homes 3D
Then File > Open > choose a downloaded .sh3d file and hit okay.

By the way, what, exactly is zipped up? None of the files listed above are zipped that I can see offhand.

Ron

I too was having troubles opening these files

I finally figured out that what was labeled a .sh3d file on the web page was being saved as a .zip file on my computer. Once you unzip them, SH did not recognize them. The solution is to rename the foo.zip back to foo.sh3d. SH then opens them correctly.

FYI - Scott's updated 2nd floor available on the wiki

In case you missed his blog post, Scott uploaded the current version of the 2nd floor plan. To keep everything in one place, I collected this link on the wiki:

...along with a number of alternate formats for those who don't have SH3D installed. Hope that helps.

Promoted New Building Info on wiki Main Page

Nice job, Jeff. I promoted the New Building Info on the Main Page to its own section, so it would be more easily found.

This fixed it for me.

I appreciate it. Thanks!
