We have put up Facebook and MySpace pages so be sure to friend us! We have also been posting discussions on different specialized forums. There have been a few articles written in some papers and we're talking about trying to get them to come back out now that we are open. Other avenues such as the billboards and making fliers are being put into effect. Does anyone else have any suggestions or be willing to put a flier on their office bulletin board? I believe we have a volunteer for the Cisco campus, but how about SAS? We love TechShop so much that we want to tell the world! But the Triangle area is fine :)

Sue Stock's column in the N&O
Sue Stock's column in the N&O is how I first heard about TechShop. I don't think she followed up at the opening, so she would be a person to tickle.
What facebook name?
I just did a search but only found TechShop Portland.
Of course, I'm traveling so the problem could be with the iPhone facebook app.
What about a Youtube channel
What about a Youtube channel for TechShop, featuring vids of machines in action, people showing off projects, etc?
I'm on Duke's campus on a
I'm on Duke's campus on a fairly regular basis and I find myself in every building from the Engineering school to the Law school. I'd be happy to put up some fliers. Is there a PDF that we could print?
Here are some suggestions for places and organizations that would be interested I think:
Woodcraft bulletin board
Lowe's
Home Depot
Ace Hardware
NC State (EVERYWHERE but especially Engineering)
UNC (EVERYWHERE but especially Engineering)
Duke (EVERYWHERE but especially Engineering)
NC Central (EVERYWHERE but especially Engineering)
Tool Rental stores
N&O
Herald-Sun
The Independent
Any of these would be far better than a billboard, in my opinion.
Awesome suggestions
Jeff,
A YouTube channel would be awesome and at one point Forrest was talking about putting some short videos up there, but I'm not sure how far he is into the process.
Jon,
We are doing the final touching up on the flier and as soon as it's done, I'll shoot it over to you.
Flyers!
At the front desk we now have a stack of flyers for people to grab for local bulletin boards or shops they frequent. Just grab some and if you see we're out for some odd reason, just holler and we'll print some more :)
You should make the fliers on
You should make the fliers on the laser using cardstock. You can make perforations by running the laser frequency down to the minimum. :-)

I think you've gone laser crazy. I understand. It is an amazing piece of equipment that you seem to have already mastered, but let's be honest, they would be too easily destroyed with all the cut outs. Besides, I like having them in pretty colors.
Pretty colors? The laser can
Pretty colors? The laser can etch paper in any color you want so long as its brown. ;-)
I picked up some of the trifolds and some of the tear-offs last night. I'll start putting them up around Duke's campus and in Durham.
Awesome
Thank you so much for the help! We're printing more tri-folds and flyers today so there will be plenty for any other interested promoters :)
PDF version?
Thanks for making the flyers available. Is there any way you can post up a PDF of each so we can print on demand whatever we need?
Thanks.
I posted three of the
I posted three of the tear-off sheets around Durham and I posted this little Craigslist ad too. http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ats/1136527333.html
I'm going to start losing friends if I don't shut up about the place though. ;-)

Me, too!
I have the same problem! When I'm not at TechShop, I'm talking about TechShop. When I'm not talking about TechShop, I'm on the website & forums! It's just so amazing to finally have a community like this. Has anyone posted to local message boards about TechShop? I know some people found us through a Durham neighborhood forum. I'm just not sure how to find local message boards. I tried Google, but I'm about the least Internet savvy person you'll ever find.
I posted a rather thorough
I posted a rather thorough post about TS on the R/D/CH Craigslist last week. Basically I reposted the FAQ and added a little personal insight.
I think that a full-page ad in MAKE, CRAFT, and ReadyMade would go a long way too. That option is, sadly, far from cheap though.
Here are more places to post . . .
For individual memberships:
Local community colleges.
Car parts stores
Sears tool department
Used auto parts yards (aka "junkyards")
local arts and crafts places (e.g., Artscape)
Michaels stores
A.C. Moore stores
other art supply shops
bike shops
motorcycle shops (how many un-modified bikes do you see?)
lumberyards
local plastics suppliers
scuba shops (many divers are DIY types)
RV dealers
If we survey everyone who walks in the door -- members and visitors -- "where did you hear about TechShop?", that'll confirm the places we need to repeat our message, and we should be able to extend that to other similar places. E.g. I heard about it from a fellow member of my local Experimental Aircraft Assn chapter; that would suggest we should get the word out to members of other local EAA chapters.

Local radio shows Scott can talk on?
Folks, what local radio talk shows can we get Scott onto to rave about the cool stuff we have at TechShop? So far, we have The State of Things, on WUNC.
Please post the name of tlak shows you listen to along with the station they're on.

d'oh
I had written to someone a year or so ago about interest in TechShop when rumors started spreading of a location opening up in the area. I was hoping to get an email when things were moving but never heard back again.
It might be useful to go back through old emails & give a heads-up to people like me who were asking before the shop opened. I only just found out *today* through a random mention on Twitter.
First, apologies for the
First, apologies for the necro bump and greetings. I read about the location in CA in the NY Times and was dismayed until a small blip at the end about a Durham location. I will spread the word among some others in the local school system, I teach tech and shop and hadn't heard of it! :S The Facebook group could probably use some updating too (still lists the Durham location).
"necro bump" - Ha! Love it. I

I was thinking the other day that putting up fliers at high-end retirement communities in the area would be a great idea. Folks would be:
1) People with free time
2) People with money
3) "old fashioned"-types who may be more inclined to build something.
Basic wood working, metal working, jewelery, sewing, and various crafts are appealing to folks like that.
Everywhere
We have new postcard flyers. If anyone wants to pick some up and distribute anywhere they think is good, take all you want.
Thanks,
Scott
Was going to post to your 4/20/10 blog, Scott...
... but comments were turned off or something. This is as good a place as any.
I'm involved with another forum (ncwoodworker.net) and posted a note about Maker Faire. There's some interest. ShopBot should be really interesting to them. Hopefully some folks from there will drop by the TSRDU booth.
Thanks...... fixed
Not sure how comments got switched off but I have fixed it . Will try to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Thanks,
Scott
Facebook page
Someone should update the Facebook page to the new name of Techshop RDU as it still has Techshop Durham now. I haven't checked the MySpace page, but I suspect it is probably the same.
Yes
Thanks, we'll look into it If you notice it in another week, please let us know again and I will assign someone to handle it.
Thanks,
Scott
New Facebook page
I was unable to get admin rights to the former TechShop Durham Facebook page so I have started a new one for TechShop RDU. Please become a fan if you haven't already!
